How To Lose Weight: 10 Tips + Habits To Help You On Your Health Journey

So you want to lose weight or get back in shape especially after being at home and eating more after the pandemic but you don’t know where to start. These 10 tips are tips that I learnt throughout my 2-year weightloss journey that I wish I knew sooner.

  1. Drink Water

You want to be drinking AT LEAST 2 litres of water a day. Water has so many benefits such as boosting your energy levels, keeping you hydrated and boosting your metabolic rate - which in effect helps you lose weight. Drinking more water will have you feeling balanced and can also satisfy unnecessary hunger.

2. Exercise & Get Active

You need to be getting exercise daily. Whether it be 10K steps, a 45-minute workout or both. You need to be physically active to burn fat and unfortunately, there is no way to get around it. Plus your body will thank you for looking after it. Take a strength training class, do pilates, skip for 10 minutes or go for a jog. There are so many different ways to get active you don’t have to just go to the gym

3. Get An Accountability Partner

Getting in shape and living an overall healthy lifestyle at times can require discipline, be a challenge and often push your limits. There will be times when you will want to give up for good and this is when having an accountability partner will be the best thing for you. Whether it be a life coach (click here to work with me), a friend or a family member. You will want somebody who you will have to answer to and make you rethink your choices when wanting to fall off the wagon.

4. Get In A Caloric Deficit

To lose fat you will HAVE to be in a caloric deficit, it’s science and there is no way around it. You need to be burning more energy than you are consuming. This will mean that you will need to be tracking your meals and your food intake. Using an app such as LifeSum or My Fitness Pal can help to track your calories but be careful not to become fixated on the numbers.

5. You Can Eat Carbs

There is a misconception that you can not eat carbs and your favourite foods. This is a lie. You need to eat everything in moderation. I always advise the 80/20 rule. 80% of the time eat clean and the other 20% can be for the meals and snacks which are tasty but not the healthiest. If you do not satisfy your cravings down the line your cheat meal will most likely turn into a cheat week or month and undo all your hard work.

6. Take It Slow & Steady

You need to understand and accept that it is going to be a journey and not a quick fix. Whether you just want to lose 10lbs or 100lbs you will have good and bad days, days when it is easier and days when it is harder but you need to remain consistent to see long term results. Do not expect anything to happen overnight and trust the process.

7. Your Best Results Will Be In The First Few Months

You will see the best results in your weight loss journey in the first few weeks and months, as your body is detoxing and you will be losing water weight. After a while, most people plateau and this is when it is easy to lose motivation. This is when you need to keep going regardless of visual results as if you do not you will most likely regain all the weight you have lost and revert to your old habits.

8. It’s A Lifestyle

You must understand that you are ultimately trying to achieve a better lifestyle and therefore this journey will affect every aspect of your life. Anything worth having does not come easy. You will have to adapt and change habits that you have had for many years to get your desired lifestyle and have general wellness.

9. Listen To Your Body

It is okay to take breaks. The worst thing you can do is overexert yourself and get an injury. Listen to the signals your body is giving you and always take appropriate action. If you need a few more rest days than usual take them. Remember it isn’t just about getting your physical health in check. Your mental health is just as important and should be seen as a priority.

10. Do Not Give-Up

You have to fight for your goals and this journey is no different. Never compare your journey to another person as you will never know their struggles and battles. Always try your best and the results will show.
