Why Self-Awareness Is Everything And More

Self-Awareness

def.

conscious knowledge of one's own character and feelings

Being self-aware is having the ability to reflect, observe and understand your behaviour, actions, thoughts

As much as we all want to believe that we are self-aware and being the best possible version of ourselves most of the time – this is a reality that simply isn't true.

Why?

Because we are all imperfect humans trying to figure out and live a life that oftentimes throws us obstacles and challenges along the way.

However, if you want to live a life filled with more purpose, passion and joy. Where your pain, trauma and past experiences and mistakes don't haunt you or continue to affect every aspect of your life. You may want to start with you, looking within and learning to be self-aware.

To be better, to heal to grow to thrive requires looking within, acknowledging emotions and feelings and the only way you can do that is through spending that time with yourself.

It will be uncomfortable at times as you will discover those ‘ugly’ traits (which we all have). How you have contributed to your own pain. How at times you may have been the ‘toxic’ one. How others really did cause you pain and even contribute to your insecurities.

I know it sounds like the last thing you would want to do. And that is why so many of us consciously or subconsciously run away from ourselves, use any distraction that the world can offer (social media, relationships) as an escape and use our ‘issues’ as crutches and excuses for our behaviour which at times is inexcusable.

So how does one go about being more self-aware?

There isn't a magical formula. What works for you won't work for somebody else. Your journey really is your own and embracing it is the best first step you can take.

It may take therapy, counselling, coaching, journaling, meditating, practising mindfulness, listening to your inner voice, healing your inner child, having an accountability partner, asking for feedback.

Remember it’s a journey and you are human, there are only a certain number of variables in your life that you can control – this is one of them. You aren't always going to get it right; some seasons will be better than others but what matters most is your effort to try and be better for you and those around you.

🦋 keep being a beautiful human 🦋
